My Name is Asheville @ 03:33 pm

I think it wasn't a date, which made the day considerably less awkward. Instead we went to a variety of shops and I emerged down some precious money and up

  • The Terra Nova Companion book for Heavy Gear
  • Some module for TSR's Top Secret
  • 20 feet or so of tubular tape, for creating anchors whilst rock climbing
  • two 5-foot lengths of 7mm rope for making prussic loops
  • 20 feet of 7mm rope for creating anchors on multi-pitch climbs
  • ten sheets of nori for my forthcoming sushi-making experiments
  • a bamboo sushi rolling mat
  • nifty martial artsy bandagey things for wrapping my foot up
  • a lead regarding replacing the frayed shoulder straps on my rucksack

And we went to see a movie - Doom! Based on the computer game! Starring The Rock! There's lots of stuff that's great about this movie, and although it could have been done better, it could certainly have been done an awful lot worse and that's what's important. Which is not to say it's not utter rubbish, because of course it is, but it's pretty much my favourite kind of rubbish. I really like the fact that The Rock is acting, and that he's doing rubbishy action movies, but I hadn't actually seen anything with him in it that I actually liked. But now I have.

Thing is, the Rock might be starring in crappy movies but he's actually a fairly competent actor (in my opinion anyway) who seems able to handle a (thus far) fair spread of different types of role. He beats the pants of most action movie heros anyway.

That's some good purchasing you did there.

THe Rock's not a bad actor, although I did briefly see him presenting some awards of some sort, and he was a lot weaker at that.

I was terribly dissappointed that the main guy was able to look up and down. And that it was more based on Doom 3 than actual Doom.

Bad things

  • Looking up and down
  • Lack of journeying through the installation, including going outside
  • The uniforms weren't right
  • Overuse of that Aliensesque pulse rifle, lack of shotgun, rocket launcher and plasma gun
  • No tomato monsters
  • Lack of that blue power-up that makes everything blue and you invulnerable and when you punch shit it explodes

Good things

  • The map
  • The chainsaw
  • The point-of-view
  • The keycards
  • Big Fucking Gun
  • The Rock
  • BFG 9000 floating and spinning
  • The logo at the start
  • "We all have to face our demons sometime."
  • "We all have to face our demons sometime." *lights go red*
  • Lack of that blue power-up that makes everything blue and you invulnerable and when you punch shit it explodes
